Dec. 5, 2006 The majority caucus of the 27th Legislature was announced Tuesday during a news conference on St. Croix. The announcement ended weeks of speculation as to who will lead the first branch of government come next month. The nine-member panel includes three Democrats, four Independent Citizen Movement Party senators and two independents.
Sen. Celestino White announced the "dynamic majority" to include himself and Sens. Terence Nelson, Liston Davis, Usie Richards, Shawn-Michael Malone and Sens.-elect Alvin Williams, James Weber, Carmen Miranda Wesselhoft and Carlton Dowe. Richards will serve as president of the 27th Legislature, Malone as vice-president; Nelson will chair the Finance Committee and Dowe will lead the Rules Committee.
The non-majority will include five democrats: Sens. Juan Figueroa-Serville, Neville James, Ronald Russell, Louis Hill and Sen.-Elect Basil Ottley Jr. Indpendent Sen. Norman Jn Baptiste is also in the non-majority. There has been no indication as to whether the six will organize as a Minority Coalition in the 27th Legislature.
