Dec. 6, 2006 – The St. John Singers will hold their 25th Annual Holiday Concert and the group's silver anniversary celebration. Under the direction of John Cahill, the choir will perform a selection of sacred and secular works on two dates: Sunday, Dec. 17, at Emmaus Moravian Church in Coral Bay and Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cruz Bay. Both performances will start at 7:30 p.m.
After giving three all-Mozart concerts in 2006, the choir will round out their celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth by including four Mozart works in the holiday concert, including "Veni Sancte Spiritus."
The program will also include a variety of familiar favorites from different countries, such as "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy," "Do you Hear what I Hear" and "Angels We Have Heard on High." The music will span the years from 15th century "Coventry Carol" to a joyous "Choral Fantasy on Old Carols" from the 20th century by Gustav Holst.
John Cahill, who has led the St. John Singers since its founding, will direct the program; and Janice Ballard, who is the music director and organist at St. Thomas Reformed Church, will accompany the choir. Soprano Detra Davis will be a guest soloist. Kashif Freeman, a student and excellent steel pan player at Charlotte Amalie High School, will play with the choir and do some solos.
