Dec. 8, 2006 — The V.I. Water and Power Authority's potable water line is coming to Smith Bay, WAPA Spokesperson Cassandra Dunn said Friday.
Work began Thursday and will continue through mid March. E.D. Plumbing Contractors will work on the project from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Dunn counseled patience as the work disrupts drivers and area residents.
"We hope they'll understand it's all for the good," she said.
The 12-inch line runs along Smith Bay Road, between the entrances to Coki Point Road and Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa.
While work is underway, one lane along the pipe route will be closed to traffic. WAPA asks that motorists obey all traffic restrictions in the work area.
The WAPA potable water line currently runs as far east as the bottom of Emerald Hill, Dunn said. Once the work on this section of Smith Bay Road is done, crews will connect the section that runs from the Wyndham to Red Hook, she said, indicating the entire project should be done by the end of 2007.
Once the Wyndham to Red Hook section is done, St. John will be able to connect via an undersea pipe, Dunn said. Hooking up to the potable water line is optional, she said, indicating she did not know how many homes were in the area or the mileage for the pipe.
WAPA customers from the top of Emerald Hill to Sugar Bay and to the Coki Point entrance who want potable water service should apply at WAPA's St. Thomas customer-service office in Subbase, or call 774-3552 for more information.
