Dec. 15, 2006 — Thursday night in the Bob Owens slow pitch softball league, Anchor Dive — down nine runs to Wyatt Heat heading into the last inning — scored 11 runs to take a 20-18 lead to the delight of their players and fans. The celebration was short lived, however, as Wyatt Heats Kennedy Feist, pinch-hitting in the bottom of the inning, blasted a game winning three-run walk-off home run to stun Anchor Dive and its fans, 21-20.
Batting first, Anchor Dive got on the board right away with three runs on a three-run home run off the bat of McIntosh. Wyatt Heat responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly by Hendrickson, an RBI single by Dexter DeSouza and four runs on RBI walks to lead 6-3 after one inning.
Anchor Dive starting pitcher, Josue Belardo, never made it out of the first inning as he gave up seven walks, which led to most of the Wyatt Heats runs. That forced his manager to make a pitching change to veteran ace Allan Woods, who got the first hitter he saw on a fly out to right to stop the bleeding.
Anchor Dive plated two runs in the top of the second on a two-run home run high over the right field fence by Phillips to close the gap to 6-5. Wyatt Heat got one in the bottom of the inning to lead 7-5 after two innings.
An RBI single by Danny Rodriguez in the top of the third briefly closed the gap to 7-6, but Wyatt Heat exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to take an apparently insurmountable lead at 16-6. They scored nine runs on a two-run home run by DeSouza, a two-run single by Steven Rosario, RBI singles by Hendrickson, Harris, and Thomas Corcino and two unearned runs.
A three-run shot by Edwin Rivera in the top of the fourth brought Anchor Dive to within seven runs at 16-9, but Wyatt Heat again extended its lead as they picked up two runs on a two-run blast over the left-center field fence by Rosario to now lead 18-9 at the end of four complete innings.
Coming to bat in the top of the fifth, knowing that it would be their last at bat due to the approaching time limit, Anchor Dive exploded for a shocking 11 runs to take a 20-18 lead. They scored 11 runs on a two-run shot by Aldemar Santos, three-run shots by Simmonds and Phillips, an RBI single by McIntosh.
In the bottom of the inning a new pitcher, Phillips, took the mound for Anchor Dive, and after walking the first two batters he faced, pinch-hitter Kennedy Feist blasted his game winning three run walk-off home run for the win.
David Oetken got the win on the mound for Wyatt Heat, while Joe Phillip, on in relief of Allan Woods, suffered the loss.
Top hitters for Wyatt Heat were Steven Rosario (2-for-3, a home run and four RBIs), Feist (1-for-1, a home run and three RBIs) and Spencer Hendrickson (2-for-3 with two RBIs).
For Anchor Dive, Danley McIntosh was 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs, Mario Simmonds was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Edwin Rivera was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
40 Caliber Knocks Off Seaborne Stealers 16-12
In the second game of the night, 40 Caliber, behind the pitching of Steve Nisky, beat defending champion Seaborne Stealers for the second time this season, 16-12.The 40 caliber win keeps them in a three-way tie for first place with Wyatt Heat and Speak the Word Ministries, all with 6-1 records.
