Dec. 28, 2006 — Fans of water and speed are gearing up for the annual Crucian Christmas Festival boat and Jet Ski races being held in Frederiksted this weekend.
"We are showcasing local power boaters," said Stephanie Berry, the festival organization's water sports secretary. Berry said residents from all three islands would be at the Albert Edwards Fish Market, at the end of Fisher Street, to participate in Sunday's race.
"The races are a tradition during festival," said Deon Malone, race organizer. Malone, who has been a fan of the races for some time, said he received his opportunity to be involved in the fun last year. "I was approached two to three weeks before [last year's race] because it looked like they weren't going to be able to do it." Since his involvement last year, the race fan was eager to repeat his success.
Malone said there would be seven races. Jet ski races are separated into two classes: A and B. Malone explained the power of the ski and the size of the engine determined the ski's class.
The power boats will compete in two Class-B races, one Class-A race, an open competition and an Outlaw race.
Malone said fans of the races would not be disappointed with returning racers like Edgar Bengoa, Alvin Theophilus, Luis Cintron and more. Last year's races were a resounding success, with an estimated 4,000-plus spectators lining the West End Beach.
The races will be held Sunday Dec. 31 at the Fish Market from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Food and drinks will be on sale, and DJ Porter will be spinning the hottest tunes. The races are a free event.
