Central High Quiz Bowl Team First to Qualify for National Competition

June 22, 2007 — The St. Croix Central High School Academic Quiz Bowl team will soon make history, having been selected as the first V.I. team to compete in the National Panasonic Academic Challenge scheduled for later this month.
"Our team members are well rounded in all content areas, and 2007 CHS graduate Austin Fabio, a science and math wiz on the team, is expected to represent us well," said CHS Principal Gary Molloy in a news release. "The St. Croix Central High School family is extremely proud of our students because they have made their mark in history, being the first school in the Virgin Islands to participate in a competition of such magnitude."
The competition, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, will be held June 22 through June 27 at the Contemporary World Resort in Orlando, Fla. While there, students will compete in subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, technology and world languages (French and Spanish). Participants are selected based on their SAT, IOWA and ACT composite scores, advanced-placement classes, special awards, recognitions/scholarships, a formal letter from the coach and an official letter from the school’s principal stating the qualification of the team.
Each competition lasts approximately two hours. Molloy will accompany the team. The CHS Academic Quiz Bowl team's coach, Cheryl Jeremiah Ambrose, will also compete against other coaches.
Team members are Kenya Emmanuel, Fabiana Constable, Kia Griffith, Schefton Mills and Anthony Fabio.
Molloy, Ambrose and the team "extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire Virgin Islands for their support, especially the V.I. Department of Education, Counselor Gregory Tyler, HOVENSA LLC, the Renaissance Group, St. Croix Lion’s Club, Frederiksted Twin City Lion’s Club, Ms. Beverly Smith, Mr. Dudley Fabio, Mr. and Mrs. Andre Francis and the U.S.V.I. Department of Tourism."
