Venezuela Opens Big League Tourney with 3-1 Win over Crucians

July 9, 2007 — The St. Croix All-Stars, representing the Virgin Islands in the 2007 Latin American Big League Baseball Tournament, lost to Venezuela 3-1 in their first game Friday night.
The game was very close, and although V.I. starting pitcher Ivor James turned in a good pitching performance, Venezuela starter David Tremont proved a little better. Tremont pitched five innings of no-hit baseball before Oswar Monsalve relieved him. Monsalve pitched the final two innings of no-hit baseball to complete the one-run no-hitter.
St. Croix’s lone run came on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.
Batting first, Venezuela scored all the runs they would need to win the game in the top of the first, plating two runs on a couple of miscues by the local squad.
The score would stay that way until the top of the fourth, when Venezuela completed their scoring for the game, picking up a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of center fielder Jose Puche to go up 3-0.
St. Croix picked up their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch, now trailing 3-1. it would turn out to be the final score of the game, as both teams would fail to score the rest of the way.
Tremont’s no-hit performance gave him the win for Venezuela, while Ivor James got the loss for St. Croix. Elwis Gotera led Venezuela’s hitting attack with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Puche went 1 for 3 with one RBI. Teammates Jose Soto and Aly Castillo both went 1 for 3.
Puerto Rico 9, Curacao 2
In the tournament’s first game, Puerto Rico roughed up Curacao 9-2 to open tournament play. Puerto Rico’s pitching gave up only one hit in the one-sided contest. Kevin Ginorio picked up the win for the Puerto Ricans, while Kevin Hennep got the loss for Curacao.
Top hitters for Puerto Rico were Fernando Garcia, 4 for 4 with one RBI; Antonio Jeminez, 1 for 4 with a grand-slam home run and four RBIs; and Daniel Ortiz, 1 for 4 with a triple and one RBI. For Curacao, Marickson Gregorius went 1 for 3.
