International artist Jeanine Kamilah Valrie Lecture

July 22 — International artist Jeanine Kamilah Valrie will lead a lecture and discussion at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted Tuesday, July 24 at 5:30 p.m. The discussion is open to all lovers of art and the general pubic.
Valrie was born and raised outside of Chicago, IL, and is now based in Washington D.C. She holds a Master of Public Health degree from George Washington University. Her artistic studies have taken her to Cuba and South Africa where she has examined the differences and similarities of each country's art and artisans as well as how artists are classified, according to the medium they use. This subject will be the basis of her talk on Tuesday.
Valrie has used her art to spark activism and has lectured on Black women's self-identification and their representation in art and language. Her discussions on violence against women, racism, HIV/AIDS, sexism and classism have ignited change in audiences.
She is the artist-in-residence for July at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted. Her visit is partially funded by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.
