VIWMA Launches New Cleanup Initiative, Needs Crews

Aug. 4, 2007 — The VI Waste Management Authority will start collecting bulk waste and white goods in some neighborhoods the third weekend of August and is looking to hire workers for cleanup crews.
Starting the weekend of Aug. 18-19 on St. Croix , disposal bins will be placed in designated areas from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. where residents can dispose of such items.
The St. Thomas/St. John/Water Island cleanup will be the weekend of Aug. 25-26 from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Bulk waste includes such items as bedding, furniture, cabinets, entertainment centers and other bulky household items. White goods refer to all appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers.
Pick-up service for bulk waste and white goods will be offered to senior citizens and the disabled who register with the VIWMA by Aug. 15 on St. Croix and Aug. 22 on St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island.
The Authority is looking for crews to work during these weekend clean-ups, including manpower and licensed and permitted haulers. Interested persons, male or female and at least 18 years of age, can apply for work for the weekend by calling and picking up an application Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following VIWMA offices: St. Croix, William’s Delight Office in Frederiksted, 340-712-4962; St. Thomas, VIWMA at Public Works, Subbase, 340-776-4844, ext. 213; St. John, VIWMA at Public Works, Susannaberg, 340-776-6346.
A meeting for interested, licensed and permitted waste haulers will be held as follows: St. Croix, 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at VIWMA’s Williams Delight Office; St. John, 10 a.m. Aug. 9 VIWMA’s Office at Public Works, Susannaberg; St. Thomas, 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at Holiday Inn/Windward Passage.
Orientation for those interested in working these clean-up weekend events will be held: St. Croix, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Aug. 11, Island Center; St. John, 6-8 p.m. Aug. 17, Legislature Conference Room; St. Thomas, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Aug. 18, Holiday Inn/Windward Passage.
Residents also can bring no more than four (4) scrap tires to a designated drop-off site during this time at a location to be announced closer to the dates. The tires are to be free of dirt, water and other debris and are not to have a rim attached.
