Running Rebels Thrash Winless Rockers 116-96

Aug. 4, 2007 — The Running Rebels ran by the Rockers 116-96 Friday night in the season finale for both teams.
The Rockers, the only winless team in this year’s Choices Basketball Association summer league, were hoping to break through with a win Friday night at the Educational Complex Gymnasium, but the Running Rebels were having none of that.
In the first quarter, the Rockers came out strong against the obviously more-talented Rebels. It was not long before the Rebels realized the Rockers were seriously looking to pull off the upset for their first win. The Running Rebels could tell they might be in for a real fight as they only led 28-27 at the end of the first quarter. Nigel Bridgewater and Calvin Blake paced the Rebels with nine points each in the quarter, while Patrick Pryce and Pete Stapleton netted eight and seven points, respectively, to keep the Rockers right there.
The Rebels showed their class in the second quarter by turning up their defensive intensity on the Rockers. They dominated both offensively and defensively to open up a 14-point lead at the half at 61-47. Rubio Heywood erupted for 14 points in the second quarter to propel his team to its double-digit halftime lead.
The Rockers played much better in the third quarter as they desperately tried to avoid a winless 10-loss season. The whole team played invigorated defense, and they were able to outscore the Rebels 22-19 to cut the lead to 11 at 80-69 when the quarter ended.
The Rockers continued their momentum to start the fourth quarter, but they were exchanging too many baskets. They managed to get a few defensive stops, and with 4:02 left in the game they pulled within eight at 94-86. Then Bridgewater seemed to say “enough is enough.” He scored eight straight points as the Rebels went on a 22-10 run to close out the game, dashing any remaining hopes the Rockers may have had.
Bridgewater and Heywood both netted 12 in the final quarter, and the pair went on to finish with 34 and 30 points, respectively, for the Rebels. Bridgewater also had seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. Other Rebel contributors were Calvin Blake, who finished with 12 points, 11 boards, six assists and five steals, and Jamal Applewhaite, who finished with 14 points. For the Rockers, Pryce had 11 points and four rebounds, Stapleton chipped in with 20 points and Jeremy Laurent knocked down 18.
