@Work: St. John Cabinets and Interiors

Aug. 10, 2007 – Debbie Grammer of St. John Cabinets and Interiors has all the bases covered when it comes to, well, cabinets and interiors.
"We design kitchens, baths, any rooms that you need cabinets for — media rooms, libraries, offices," Grammer said. Her customers range from do-it-yourselfers on modest budgets to villa owners who want top-of-the-line cabinets. She also supplies large projects with upwards of 40 units.
And Grammer's sold cabinets to some of the island's famous sometime residents who shall go nameless.
Located at the Marketplace shopping center, the company recently enhanced its visibility, moving from a side hallway location to the second floor main drag. Among the brands carried are Craftmaid, Bruce Cabinetry, Crystal Fine Cabinetry, Conestoga Cabinetry, and Olde South Cabinetry.
Grammer said customers face many decisions. Do they want maple, cherry, or mahogany wood or a painted finish, a light, natural or a dark look?
"I work closely with the client in changing things around," she said.
She said she makes an appointment to visit the house or takes a look at the plans if it is new construction. Grammer takes physical measurements, asks questions about the appliances, and goes back to the office to work out the design on her computer. She comes up with three-dimensional drawings so customers can get a visual picture of their kitchen or other room.
She said it then takes anywhere from four to 12 weeks for the cabinets to arrive.
While she's based on St. John, Grammer said she also works with customers on St. Thomas. Certified by the National Kitchen and Bath Association of America, Grammer said she'll shortly have an interactive website where customers can work on designs.
Born in Ogden, Utah, she met her future husband John Grammer there, and the two were married eight years ago. They soon moved to St. John, where John Grammer had once lived and has strong ties. His half-brother is the St. Thomas-born actor, Kelsey Grammer.
Grammer said she quickly fell in love with St. John, and the two jumped into island life. They opened the Mail Center at the Marketplace several years ago, but after they sold it several years ago she took a short retirement before opening St. John Cabinets and Interiors.
Between them, she and her husband have five children and two grandchildren. One of John Grammer's daughters lives with them on St. John.
