Police Probe Drive-By Shooting, Death In St. Croix Cemetery

Aug. 14, 2007 – Police Commissioner James McCall said Monday the body of a 41-year-old woman was discovered in the Western Suburb cemetery and police are investigating the cause of death.
The woman, identified as Vickie Lynn Atkinson, was found at 5:15 p.m. Monday and appeared to have an entry wound to the neck. Police were awaiting medical reports to determine the type of weapon that was used, McCall said.
Meanwhile, police were also looking into a drive-by shooting that left four people injured Sunday night in the Estate Diamond area.
According to a statement from the Police Department, reports of the shooting were called in to police about 8:26 p.m. Witnesses told police that an unknown number of suspects in a gold vehicle opened fire on several individuals as they sat at a bar in the area.
The victims, who ranged in age from 21 to 35, were all rushed to Luis Hospital by an unknown bystander in a private vehicle, the police statement said.
One of the victims was a 21-year-old man from Estate Strawberry who sustained a gunshot wound to the right forearm. Another 21-year-old man, also from Estate Strawberry, was shot in the left leg. The third victim, a 21-year-old Estate Work and Rest resident, sustained gunshot wounds to his left hip area and right leg near the knee. A 35-year-old male, also of Estate Strawberry, sustained gunshot wounds to the upper left leg and right foot.
Police are urging anyone who may have information on Atkinson’s death and the drive-by shootings or any other unsolved crimes to contact Investigations Bureau at 712-6076 or 911.
