Alert: Sewage Bypass in Figtree Gut, Cane Garden Beach

Aug. 23, 2007 — A manhole collapse on the westbound shoulder of the Melvin Evans Highway caused a lane closure on westbound side and disabled the Figtree Pump Station, according to the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. Raw sewage is being bypassed into the Figtree Gut adjacent to the HOVENSA LLC Housing Complex, which eventually enters Cane Garden Beach.
DPNR is advising the public to avoid the areas around the Figtree Gut. DPNR is also advising that children and adults with compromised immune systems should avoid the above mentioned areas. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health. VI Waste Management Authority anticipates repairs will be completed and the pump station brought back online and the discharge ceased within the next 4 to 5 days. For additional information contact the V.I. Waste Management Authority.
