Thymes Slug Sluggers 21-9 in Women’s Softball Action

Aug. 27, 2007 — The Thymes blasted the Sluggers 21-9 in five innings Sunday in women’s softball at the D.C. Canegata ballpark.
The game was over in the bottom of first inning when the Thymes erupted for 12 runs on nine hits, and they never looked back. The game was called in the fifth inning by way of the 10-run mercy rule.
After the Sluggers failed to score in the top of the first inning, the Thymes erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Jennifer Brady and Shay Roberts, a two-run home run by Shanika Chelcher and a plethora of miscues by the Sluggers.
The Sluggers came up with one run in the top of the second on a fielder’s choice, but the Thymes answered with a run on an RBI single by Niza Delerme to maintain their 12-run lead at 13-1 after two innings.
The Thymes continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the third after the Sluggers failed to score in the top of the inning. They erupted for five runs to push their lead to 18-1, but only one run was earned. That earned run came on an RBI ground out by Zahra O’Reilly.
The Sluggers finally showed some life in the top of the fourth when they rallied for eight runs against a suddenly wild Thymes starting pitcher, Chenea Harvey. After pitching a good game and sailing along nicely over the first three innings, Harvey suddenly went wild after giving up 10 walks and had to be replaced by Manager Lisa Thomas.
The Sluggers scored 10 runs on bases-loaded walks drawn by Melanesia Hendrickson, Pauline Humphrey, Shanice James, Lilly Williams, Melanesia Encarnacion, a two-run single by Daria Bollings and an error by the Thymes shortstop to go down 18-9. The Thymes answered with three runs on a two-run double by O’Reilly and an RBI single by Akema Edwards to push their lead to 12 at 21-9.
The game was called after the Sluggers failed to score in the top of the fifth.
Despite her wild fourth inning, Harvey pitched well enough in the early parts of the game to pick up the victory. Humphrey took the loss for the Sluggers.
Top hitters for Thymes were Chelcher, 2 for 4 with two RBIs; Brady, 2 for 2 with one RBI; O’Reilly, 2 for 4 with three RBIs; and Edwards, 3 for 4 with one RBI.
For the Sluggers, Bolling went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
