Swimming Association Needs Instructors, Lifeguards

Aug. 29, 2007 — The St. Thomas Swimming Association (STSA) opens it fall season at the Estate Nazareth pool next week, and it needs help.
The association needs more swimming instructors and lifeguards with current certification, said Yvonne Freeman, president of the STSA board. The pool is closed for maintenance until Tuesday, when the season officially opens.
"We need as much staff as we can get,” Freeman said Wednesday. “The pool gets very busy on weekends."
The association has instructors on board now, but it needs more. "We need people who have either taught in a pool or in fresh water," Freeman said. The openings are paid positions, she said.
Completing the pool was a project that spanned two decades. The 25-meter Olympic-sized pool opened in October 2006 to much fanfare. Even after 20 years, the pool's opening was a joyous, well-attended event. Freeman and former STSA Executive Director Katherine Huttel were the stars of the day. Along with being able to offer swimming lessons in a non-threatening environment, trips for the STSA Stingrays to St. Croix for swim meets have become a thing of the past. Tryouts for the swim team are at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10 through 12. Team practice is from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting Sept. 10. Members may sign up and pay fees starting Tuesday, when the pool opens.
Registration for beginning swim classes is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday next week. Session one swimming classes begin Sept. 8. The fee for a four-week session is $42. Freeman said she likes to keep the classes to about eight students.
STSA aquatic director Robert Fischer will conduct interviews. Freeman asks applicants to call her at 779-7872 or 643-4710 for an interview.
