First Leg of Native-Bred Triple Crown Headlines Labor Day Race Card

Aug. 31, 2007 — The horses will be off and running in the annual Labor Day races on Sunday, with the first leg of the native-bred Triple Crown, the Cruzan Rum Classic, the feature race of the day.
The race, at a distance of one mile, will feature the top four native-bred thoroughbreds in the territory: Bronco’s Jig (118), Fantastic Four (118), Fightforyourrights (118) and the lone filly in the race, Guavaberry Star (115). The two favorites in the race will undoubtedly be Fantastic Four and Guavaberry Star, whose barns are very high on their respective racehorses.
Last race day, these two hooked up in a five-furlong speed duel that left the track buzzing with excitement. The filly raced off the rump of Fantastic Four before collaring in the stretch and going on to win by a long neck in a thrilling 59 seconds. The dark horse of the race is Bronco’s Jig, who was another talented up-and-coming native before injury sidelined him. He now has some racing under his belt, and could possibly surprise here.
In the eighth race for top imports, the Innovative Handicap at a distance of 1 1/16 miles, three St. Croix horses — Zirito (118), Crafty Smile (117) and Gallego (116) — will take on two horses from St. Thomas in Silver Horn (115) and Overpayment (117). Silver Horn and Zirito will probably be the slight favorites, but this race could have a surprise winner. The speed of Crafty Smile out of the gate could set the race up for one of the closers to come from far back to win. If they let Crafty Smile get a huge lead, however, they may not be able to catch him.
