Club USA Teams Dominate Biggest Labor Day Volleyball Tourney Yet

Sept. 4, 2007 — UVI's Annual Labor Day Volleyball Tournament was bigger this year than ever before, showcasing teams from the mainland and all over the Caribbean, including neighbors such as Antigua, St. Kitts and the British Virgin Islands.
Of course, the lineup also included a variety of teams from the territory, including St. Thomas Top Spin (the local power-league champions), the St. Croix Female All Stars and male and female teams from UVI.
It was a tough weekend for the UVI teams, who were winless throughout the tournament. Curtis Gilpin, coach of the UVI Lady Bucs, attributed the team's performance to growing pains, saying that out of seven new players on the team this year, only two came with volleyball experience.
However, he said the upcoming season would give the team a chance to rebuild, combining new recruits with what should be, by then, an experienced and seasoned team.
Club USA teams, both male and female, dominated the tournament, which was held at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas. Both teams went 4-0, winning their sides of the bracket.
Following behind USA on the male side was St. Thomas Top Spin, going 1-1. UVI Male Bucs rounded out the group, going 0-2.
Caribbean Chix — a mixture of players from the Eastern Caribbean — showed a lot of power on the female side, coming in behind Club USA with a 3-1 record. St. Croix Stars and St. Thomas Full Force had one win apiece. UVI Lady Bucs rounded out the group with no wins.
The most outstanding female player for the tournament was Full Force's Jenelle Sarauw, while the most outstanding male honor went to Club USA's Tom Liszka.
