Champions Determined at St. Croix Cross-Country

Oct. 26, 2007 – The V.I. Pace Runners/4-Cross-Country Series named elementary school championships yesterday and saw top junior high, high school and open runners perform at their best at the UVI St. Croix Campus Cross-Country Course. Visiting triathletes Austair Brown and Stu Hayes from the British National team claimed the top two spots in the open 5-K race. Brown ran the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes and 52 seconds; his teammate Haynes was second in 16:10, with St. Croix's Billy Bohlke taking third place with a time of 16:58. Seymour Walter of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School was the first high school finisher with a time of 17:26; Ian Cuffy of ECHS was second in 19:35, and Rabin Quinterio of St. Croix Central High School was third in 20:14. Ninfa Barnard was the top open female with a time of 21:29, and Eustaefha Fredrick of CHS was the first high school female in 30:32.
Evelyn M. Williams School took the honors for the boys and girls championships. Sunny Isle Baptist Christian School took second for the boys, and Alfredo Andrews School was third. St. Croix Country Day School was the second-place girls team by 1 point over Eulalie Rivera Elementary School.
Kadesha Barry of John H. Woodson School was the first place elementary school finisher; she covered the one-mile course in 6 minutes and 37 seconds. Jatesha Ellis of Arthur A. Richards School was second in 7:05; Karen Dascent of Ricardo Richards School was third in 7:11.
Maliques Smith of Sunny Isle Baptist Christian School was the first place elementary school finisher for boys with a time of 6:17; Jelani Prince of Eulalie Rivera School was second in 6:33; Curtis Walker of St. Croix Country Day School was third in 6:41.
Marlina Tonge of St. Croix Central High School was the first junior-varsity female finisher over the two-mile course in 16:04; Maria Irizarry of CHS was second in 18:31; Kayla Smith of Arthur A. Richard Jr. High School was third in 20:04.
Alex Woodson of John Woodson Jr. High School was the first male JV finisher in 11:22; David Walters of ECHS was second in 11:34; Emanuel Encarnacion of ECHS was third in 12:55.
The next race will be held on Nov. 10, and will determine the Virgin Islands Cross-Country Champions elementary, high school, open and master runners.
