Marciano Monell to Exhibit Art Through Dec. 18

Marciano Torres Monell will be exhibiting his recent paintings, entitled "Paradise Passions," at Danica Art Gallery. The opening reception will be held on the first 'Art Thursday' of the season, from 5-8 p.m., on Nov. 15, at the gallery, 54 King Street, Christiansted (directly across the street from Government House). His work will be on display through Dec. 18.
Monell, also known as "Rocky," is a self-taught artist. He took up a pencil to sketch art at a very early age on his native island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. In 1960, while on tour at the Marine Corps Airbase at Fatima, he transitioned from pencil sketching to painting oil on canvas. Rocky painted a nativity scene that was exhibited during the Christmas holidays to boost troop morale. He also painted a scene depicting Fire Safety on a 22-feet canvas for the Firemen Brigade at Okinawa. He settled on St. Croix in 1970.
After his retirement at the age of 71, the artist dedicated his time fully to capturing the island's beauty with oil on canvas.
Rocky has exhibited his art at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts and at the V.I. Housing Finance Authority's open house in Frederiksted. Many of his art pieces have been sold through private viewings at his residence.
For more information about the exhibition, call the gallery at 719-6000.
