Thomas Hits and Pitches Las Vegans to Lopsided 18-8 Victory Over Mash Up

Nov. 19, 2007 — Las Vegans blasted Mash Up 18-8 Sunday to take game one of their best two-of-three playoff series at the D.C. Canegata ballpark. The winner of this series will move on to face the defending champions, Just for Fun, in the finals.
Batting first, Mash Up was out of the gate early with three runs plated in the top of the first inning. They scored on a two-run double by Ephrain Rodriguez and a Las Vegans error. Las Vegans failed to score in the bottom of the inning.
In the second, Mash Up came up empty in the top of the inning. Las Vegans exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-3 lead, and they were never seriously threatened again. They scored 11 runs on a three-run triple by Ramon Thomas, a two-run single by Tony Watts, an RBI double by Steve Simmonds and a plethora of Mash Up errors.
Colin Jarvis' two-run blast in the top of the third brought Mash Up two runs closer at 11-5, but Las Vegan answered with three runs on a two-run triple by Steve Simmonds and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Benny Luis to extend their lead to nine runs at 14-5 at the end of three completed innings.
Mash Up was back on the attack in the top of the fourth, scoring three more runs to get to within six at 14-8, but that would be as close as they would get, not scoring again. A two-run double by Rodriguez and an RBI single by Jarvis accounted for all of the Mash Up runs in the inning. Las Vegans were one run better in the bottom of the inning as they came up with four runs to open a 10-run lead on a three-run double by Irvin Simmonds and a solo shot by Watts to go up 18-8 after five innings.
Needing to score at least one run to avoid the 10-run mercy-rule in the top of the fifth, Mash Up came up way short as they went quietly in order and the game was called.
Thomas pitched the win for Las Vegans, while Allan Yarwood took the loss for Mash Up. Top hitters for Las Vegans were Thomas, 3 for 3 with three RBIs; Watts, 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs; and Simmonds, 2 for 3 with three RBIs. For Mash Up, Jarvis was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Rodriguez went 3 for 3 with four RBIs.
