Copenhagen Chamber Ensemble to Perform

Nov. 25, 2007 – Arts Alive will present The Copenhagen Chamber Ensemble at 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Tillett Gardens. A broad selection of music from the Baroque period provides the foundation–though by no means the limitations–of the Copenhagen ensemble's repertoire.
The ensemble consists of Hans Gammeltoft-Hansen on the flute, Gert Herzberg on the oboe, Wladyslaw Marchwinsky on the violin, Anders Oberg on the cello and Steen Lindholm on the harpsichord. Three of them are graduates of the distinguished Copenhagen Choir School, and they give concerts throughout Europe.
Besides its Baroque repertoire, the ensemble plays a range of contemporary, Scandinavian and Icelandic music. Contemporary Scandinavian composers like Leif Kayser, Erik Norby, and Oddvar S. Kvam regularly compose works for them to premiere. They have released a CD, "Kayser-Nordal-Sigurbjornsson," that showcases contemporary Danish music and another of their CDs, "The Copenhagen Chamber Ensemble Plays Roman, Scheibe, Telemann, Boismortier and Vivaldi" can be downloaded online.
Tickets for the concert only are $30. They are $70 with the prix fixe dinner, excluding gratuity. Reservations are recommended. Tickets can be purchased at Tillett Gardens in the Tillett Gallery between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information and to make reservations, call 776-8566 or e-mail artsalive@tillett.net. This program is funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
There will be additional opportunities to hear evenings of great music performed by the ensemble. The St. John performance will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, on Jan. 15, as a cooperative effort of the Society and the St. John School of the Arts. It will be held at the school; tickets are priced at $30. For information, call 779-4322. Their final concert will be held at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Nisky Moravian Church, under the sole sponsorship of the St. Thomas –St. John Friends of Denmark Society Inc. Tickets are $30. The programs at the two concerts on St. Thomas will not be the same. For more information, call 774-0212.
