V.I. Steel Pan Story to Air on ABC and FOX this Sunday

Dec. 7, 2007 – A special half-hour documentary, "Dem Steel Pans," will air at 7 p.m. on FOX and at 7:30 p.m. on ABC, Sunday, Dec. 9.
The televised special features the history and heritage of steel pan music in the Virgin Islands. Noted historians and local musicians, including members of The St. Thomas All Stars Steel Orchestra, are interviewed for a tribute to the music of steel drums.
The program, uninterrupted by commercial breaks, explores the cultural significance of steel pan in the U.S.V.I. from the first sounds of the Antiguan band "Hell's Gate" in 1949 through Carnival in 1952 to the current steel pan scene today.
Narrator Sam Topp tells the story with vignettes and commentary from Elvine "Sifu" George, Lorna Young-Wright, Glen "Kwabena" Davis, Bill Bass, Samuel Lawrence and others. Niles "Nicky" Russell provided historic research and ISW Productions produced the DVD. The program was funded by Banco Popular in an ongoing effort to preserve V.I. history and heritage.
