Hooters Opens Tuesday at Buccaneer Mall

Dec. 11, 2007 — Hooters restaurant opened Tuesday at Buccaneer Mall on St. Thomas.
"People have been unbelievable," said Mark James, a Hooters owner. "They're very receptive."
James said he's been on St. Thomas for the past few months to get the restaurant open. He'll be on island several more weeks.
The restaurant's theme is beach casual, James said.
The restaurant's menu is the same as the more than 435 Hooters restaurants located around the world. It runs to dishes like chicken wings, sandwiches, burgers, oysters, shrimp and salads. However, James said there are a few items, like conch fritters and crab cakes, that have a local slant.
The jukebox plays rock and roll songs from the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
"And the Hooters girls are dressed like cheerleaders," he said, referring to the waitresses. They wear orange shorts and white tank tops.
The restaurant employs 30 people, James said. The company has not received Economic Development Commission tax benefits, he said.
The location near the Havensight cruise-ship docks is excellent, but the restaurant also appeals to locals, James said.
Hooters picked St. Thomas because the market was "vibrant" with such projects as the Yacht Haven Grande fostering development, he said. Hooters is a stone's throw from the recently opened YHG.
Hooters St. Thomas is part of a planned expansion that includes Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the Turks and Caicos, and Barbados.
"It's a three-year plan," James said.
Hooters held a pre-opening, invitation-only party that brought out 600 people to sample the menu and drink free beer.
Hooters at Buccaneer Mall is open from 10 a.m. to midnight every day.
