Just for Fun Dynasty Rolls On with 8th Straight Championship

Dec. 14, 2007 — The Just for Fun dynasty in the Quarren Schjang 40-plus Softball League marched on as they claimed their eighth consecutive championship in as many years on Wednesday at the D.C. Canegata ballpark with a 26-14 victory.
This year’s victims were long ago champs Las Vegans, who although they put up a good fight, were no match for the depth of the JFF pitching and overall offense and defense. The middle of the JFF line up was especially lethal on Wednesday as the third, fourth, fifth and sixth hitters blasted a combined eight home runs that included three grand slams. Kai Schjang, Raymond Cintron, Guido Schjang and Eustace Davis each blasted two round trippers for the champs.
Virgillio Diaz started the game for the Las Vegans and looked sharp early as he kept JFF scoreless over the first three innings. The Las Vegans on the other hand got out of the gate early as they plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning after JFF came up empty in their half. They scored five runs on RBI singles by Dennis Brow and Jesus Saldana, an RBI double by Warren Christian, and a two Run triple by Benny Luis.
The score would stay that way until the fourth inning when JFF finally got on the board with three runs on RBI singles by Guido Schjang and Davis, and an RBI ground out by Mario Ortiz. The Las Vegans answered with one run in the bottom of the inning on David Clarke’s RBI single and they led 6-3 at the end of four innings.
JFF was back on the attack in the top of the fifth when they scored five runs to take their first lead at 8-6. They scored five runs on a grand slam by Kai Schjang and a solo shot off the bat of Cintron. Their lead was short-lived, however, as the Las Vegans answered with four runs on RBI singles by Steve Simmonds and Luis, and a two run single by Frank Rijos to retake the lead at 10-8. It would prove to be their final lead of the season.
JFF came out roaring in the top of the sixth inning as they exploded for 12 runs to virtually lock up the championship. Their 12-run explosion was highlighted by two-run home runs by Cintron and Davis, and a grand slam by Kai Schjang. The Las Vegans could only muster one run in the bottom of the inning and they went to the seventh inning trailing 20-11.
The defending champs were not done scoring just yet and they put another six runs on the board a grand slam by Guido Schjang, a solo shot by Davis and an RBI single by Kai Schjang to extend their lead to an insurmountable 15 runs at 26-11. Facing a monumental task of a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, the Las Vegans could only come up with five runs and they went down in defeat, 26-14.
Mario Ortiz, roughed up for five runs in the first inning, settled down nicely to pick up the complete game victory. Diaz got the loss for the Las Vegans. Top hitters for JFF were, Kai Schjang, 4 for 4 with two home runs and eight RBIs, Guido Schjang, 3 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs, Davis, 3 for 5 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Cintron was 4 for 6 with two home runs and three RBIs. For the Las Vegans, Luis was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Saldana, 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Simmonds was 3 for 4.
