Agriculture Awards Forestry Program Grants

Dec. 18, 2007 – The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture's Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Program recently awarded funding to eight community groups for proposals that address education, conservation and the preservation of our trees and forests.
Grants totaling $109,100 have been awarded for projects including an edible garden and forest trails project at an elementary school on St. Croix; dry forest and wetlands teacher training seminars on St. Croix; and a landscaping project at an animal care facility on St. Thomas. All of the winning proposals included a 50 percent match in cash, kind or donations to the funds granted by the program.
The U&CF Program seeks proposals for project funding from local government, nonprofit organizations, civic and/or educational organizations, including but not limited to schools, homeowners' associations, service clubs and environmental organizations. Any nonfederal organization operating within the U.S.V.I. may apply for a Challenge Cost-Share Grant, and applications are accepted periodically during the year.
For more information, visit the U&CF Web site: www.viucf.org or call Marilyn Chakroff at 778-0997, ext. 233.
