East End Marine Park Launches Tours Above and Below the Sea

Jan. 8, 2008 — St. Croix's East End Marine Park has begun to offer guided tours and snorkel trips led by park Ranger John Farchette III.
"They're to bring awareness to the park," Farchette said.
The tours cover natural history and cultural aspects of the territorial park and its adjacent land. There is no limit on the number of people for the tours, but the snorkel trips are limited to nine people.
On Friday, Farchette takes participants snorkeling at Rod Bay to explore the park's marine life. Beginners are welcome, and some snorkeling gear is available. Meet at 9 a.m. at the park office at Estate Great Pond. When driving west to east on Southshore Road, make the second right after the old Camp Arawak road.
The Rod Bay snorkel trip will run again Jan. 18.
On Jan. 16, explore the geophysical attributes of Robins Bay, a landlocked wetland. Discover a seldom visited pre-Columbian site. Meet at 9 a.m. at the park office at Estate Great Pond.
The Jan. 23 tour goes to Jack's Bay, a Nature Conservancy property on the island's East End. Examine a pristine beach and undeveloped watershed within a managed nature preserve. Meet at 9 a.m. at the park office at Estate Great Pond.
On Jan. 30, visit the St. Croix Environmental Association's Coastal Reserve to observe one of St. Croix’s most important bird sanctuaries and view migrating birds wintering on St. Croix. View turtle-nesting beaches and learn about efforts to protect nesting hawksbill and leatherback turtles. Meet at 9 a.m. at the St. Croix Environmental Association Coastal Reserve located east of Southgate Pond.
The Jan. 31 snorkeling clinic is at Cramers Park. Participants will explore the park's marine life. Beginners are welcome. Some snorkeling equipment is available. Spaces are limited. Meet at 9 a.m. at Cramers Park.
Reservations are not required but recommended. Make reservations by calling 773-3367. Ask for "park tours."
