UVI to Waive Application Fee During 'Cream of the Crop' Ag Fair Promotion
Individuals planning to apply for admissions to the University of the Virgin Islands for the fall 2008 semester can save the $25 application fee by visiting the UVI tent at the upcoming Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair on St. Croix. The fair is scheduled for Feb. 16 through 18. Persons applying during this "Cream of the Crop" promotion at the UVI tent must present a sealed, official transcript from their high school, or another college or university, and an official, original copy of their SAT/ACT scores. Seminar on Cancer Research Set at UVI on Friday, Feb. 8
A seminar focusing on cancer research conducted by UVI Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Thomas is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas, with a tele-conference link to Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus. Mandatory Student Employee Orientation Sessions Set on St. Thomas Campus
The UVI Student Employment Office has announced that New Student Employment Orientation Sessions are scheduled on the St. Thomas campus on Feb. 12 and 13. It is mandatory for new student employees to attend one of these orientation sessions. The Feb. 12 session will run from 10 a.m to 11:30 a.m. The Feb. 13 session is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Both will take place in Teachers Education building room T-101. Student employees or their supervisors should contact the Student Employment Office at 693-1088 to indicate which session students will attend.

UVI Writing Center Sets Open House in Observance of Writing Center Week
The Writing Center on UVI's St. Croix campus will conduct an open house in conjunction with the International Writing Center Association's observance of Writing Center Week from Feb. 11-15. UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to meet the center's tutors and learn more about the program. All are also encouraged to try one of the center's "brain twister" puzzles. The Writing Center is located in Modular Building room 104 (across from the Great House). Open house hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. For more information, call 778-1620 – ext 4218.

Financial Aid Workshop Slated for Feb. 15 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's St Thomas campus Financial Aid Workshop for 2008-2009 is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 15, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. The workshop, which is open to all students, will focus on what types of financial aid is available and provide assistance in filling out the online Federal Application for Student Aid (FASA). Sessions are planned from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, contact Norma Williams at 693-1090.

Douglas, James Win St. Croix Campus Student Government Association Election
UVI freshman students Jasmine Douglas and Shaniqua James have been elected to serve as senators in the St. Croix campus Student Government Association (SGA). Douglas and James were selected from among six students vying for the positions in an election held on Feb. 6. The election was conducted by the SGA and the Office of Student Activities. Regalia Measurements Offered Beginning Feb. 11 at St. Croix Bookstore
The St. Croix campus Bookstore will offer measurement for commencement regalia (caps and gowns) from Feb. 11 through March 14. Measurements completed after March 14 will incur a $15 shipping charge. After March 21 there will be a $25 express shipping charge. Students need to present receipts from the business office to take part. For details, call the Bookstore at 692-4162.

Spring Get-A-Way to Jost Van Dyke Slated for March 1; Space Limited
Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands will be the destination for the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office "Spring Get-A-Way." Scheduled for Saturday, March 1, the excursion will depart the Tortola Wharf in Charlotte Amalie at 9 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Ticket prices are $40 for UVI students, $60 for UVI faculty and staff, $80 for non-staff and non-students and $25 for children under 12. An eco-tour to Jost Van Dyke's bubbling pool is available for an extra $50. Space is limited to the first 149 persons to sign up. UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) program will staff an information booth at the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair slated for Feb. 16-18, on St. Croix. Varsity Basketball Team Photos, Pictures from Home Openers Posted
Team photos of UVI's varsity basketball squads – the Buccaneers and the Lady Bucs – are now available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. The team photos, and a selection from pictures from the Feb. 1 season-opening games, can be viewed from a variety of web links: Athletics web site Photo Gallery; UVI web site Current Events section.
The squads begin a two-week road campaign with games in Puerto Rico against Caribbean University on Feb. 8 and Central Bayamon on Feb. 9. They will also visit Puerto Rico on Feb. 15 and 16, for matchups against UPR-Carolina and UPR Humacao, respectively.
The Buccaneers' next home game is slated for Feb. 22, when Polytecnica visits the Sports and Fitness Center. The complete 2008 basketball schedule is available from the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.

Governor's Safety, Health Conference Set for St. Thomas and St. Croix
The third annual Governor's Safety and Health Conference – with sessions on St. Croix and St Thomas – will be sponsored this year by the V.I. Department of Labor in partnership with UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. The St. Croix session is set for Feb. 21-22 at the Carambola Beach Resort. On St. Thomas, the conference will take place on Feb. 25-28 at Marriott's Frehchman's Reef Resort.
The conference – which is free – is designed to emphasize the prevention of workplace injury, illness, and death while reducing worker compensation costs. It is open to the general public as well as private sector employers. Safety and health professionals will provide expert instruction on topics such as hazard communication, personal protective equipment and how mold affects workers. Training sessions for the general construction, healthcare and hospitality industries will be included. Conference seating is limited. UVI Community Invited to Attend Golden Key Honour Society Induction
Golden Key International Honour Society, St. Thomas Chapter, will conduct its ann

CLEP Tests Offered Feb. 13 on UVI's St. Thomas Campus
The next scheduled offering of CLEP – College Level Exam Program – tests is scheduled on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Feb. 13. The deadline to register for that date is Feb. 11. Successfully completing a CLEP test allows students to earn college credit, save money and cut the time it takes to earn a degree. The tests are offered in more than 20 areas of study, ranging from accounting to chemistry to English literature. A complete list is available on pages 26 and 27 of the 2007-08 UVI Catalog – available online on the UVI home page: www.uvi.edu.

'A Week in Black History' Events Set on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Black Heritage Committee and the UVI Accounting Association will present a series of events and activities titled "A Week in Black History" during the week of Feb. 17 on the University's St. Thomas campus. The groups are also sponsoring an "I Have A Dream" essay contest for all UVI students. The deadline to submit essays is Feb. 10.
The week's activities open with a forum on Greek life at HBCUs which will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, in the Dining Pavilion. A social arts and crafts night, and art show are planned at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Dining Pavilion.
A dance show at the Dining Pavilion is scheduled from 9 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 20. A civil rights debate is scheduled at 8 p.m. on Feb. 21 in Chase Auditorium (B-110). A rally is set for 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at the Dining Pavilion.
A play on Black History, sponsored in collaboration with the St. Croix Guild Workshop, is planned for Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Charlotte Amalie High School auditorium. An exhibit opens at 5 p.m. and the play follows at 7 p.m.

UVI Buck Island Excursion Scheduled for Feb. 23
UVI's 2008 spring semester Buck Island Excursion is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 23. Organized by the Office of Student Activities on the St. Croix campus, the excursion will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will cost $20 for registered UVI students and $40 for faculty, staff, and non-UVI students. Included are round-trip transportation (UVI Campus to Christiansted Wharf), on-site barbeque, and optional snorkeling and hiking. Space is limited. Sign-up in the Student Activities Lounge.
