Alert: WAPA Begins Water-Conservation Measures in Parts of St. Thomas

March 4, 2008 — The V.I. Water and Power Authority began a water-conservation schedule in designated areas of St. Thomas today, which will continue until water reserves are replenished.
WAPA experienced limited availability of the steam-generating process in the Randolph E. Harley Power Plant during the past week, which has reduced water production, according to Gregory Rhymer, chief operating officer. WAPA announced the schedule in a news release.
Between Wednesday and Sunday, St. Thomas' public-housing communities will have water service daily from 5 to 9 a.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. only. Public schools and government offices will have water service during normal working hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., after which service will be curtailed to these agencies until the following morning.
WAPA will review the schedules on a daily basis and will make every effort to reduce the impact of the water-conservation schedules on its customers while maintaining the integrity of the system, according to Rhymer. The authority will also do everything possible to maintain adequate water service to customers not presently included in the conservation schedule, but all customers are urged to be conservative in their water use and plan accordingly.
All customers will benefit by keeping showers short, with pressure at low force; turning off faucets while brushing teeth or shaving; washing dishes by filling wash and rinse basins with water to avoid running water continuously; recycling the rinse water to water plants; immediately repairing leaks and drips; matching the water level to the load size in washing machines and washing only full loads; and avoiding extra cycles in the dishwasher, according to the release.
