Dolphin Shock Claudio 23-20 in Bob Owens Slow Pitch Upset

March 11, 2008 — The Divi Carina Bay Dolphins pulled a huge upset Monday night in the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League, knocking off league-leading Claudio Enterprises 23-20 in the second game.
The Dolphins scored early but found themselves down 20-15 late. An eight-run fifth-inning explosion, however, propelled the Dolphins to victory over Claudio at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
Batting first, the powerful Claudio squad plated five runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run by Antonio Cruz Sr. and a two-run shot by Miguel Rodriguez to take the early lead. The Dolphins was equal to the task, responding with five runs of their own on a grand slam by Jeffery Naar and an RBI single by Edwin Derweer to knot the game at five after one inning.
Claudio retook the lead at 8-5 in the top of the second, scoring three runs on a two-run single by Luis Moreno and a Dolphins error. The Dolphins exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 12-8 lead at the end of two. They scored seven runs on a three-run shot by Derweer, a two-run shot by Luis Ramon and a two-run single by Martin Burgos.
After Claudio failed to score in the top of the third , Derweer's three-run blast extended the Dolphins' lead to seven at 15-8.
Claudio came out strong in the top of the fourth inning, erupting for seven runs to tie the game at 15. They scored seven runs on a three-run blast by Julio Carmona, solo shots by Moreno and Antonio Cruz Jr., and RBI singles by Enercido Bon and Miguel Rodriguez. The Dolphins went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Claudio went back on the attack in the top of the fifth, scoring five times on a three-run home run by Cruz Sr. and RBI singles by Wilfredo Ferera and Morena, to take a 20-15 lead. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Dolphins exploded for eight big runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run home run by Derweer, two-run singles by Juan Burgos and Juan Bermudez and a Claudio error to take the lead for good, at 23-20. Claudio would fail to score again the rest of the way.
Naar picked up the win on the hill for the Dolphins, while Carmona got the loss for Claudio. Top hitters for the Dolphins were Derweer, 4 for 4 with two home runs and seven RBIs; Naar, 3 for 4 with a grand slam and four RBIs; and Elizer Ramirez, 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. For Claudio, Moreno went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Cruz Sr. went 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs, and Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
