Murderer Escaped By 'Slipping Through a Fence,' Attorney General Says

March 18, 2008 — Though many of the details are still unknown, it is clear at this point that convicted murderer and rapist Jeffrey Warner escaped by "slipping through a fence" at St. Croix's Golden Grove Correctional Facility, according to Attorney General Vincent Frazer.
Frazer expected to get a full report on the escape from the facility's warden and Bureau of Corrections officers earlier in the day, he said Tuesday evening, but found out that it would not be ready until Wednesday. Meanwhile, the only information Frazer said he can release is that Warner was last seen at the prison between 6 and 7 p.m. Saturday, but was not present when guards did a head count around 12 a.m. Sunday.
"For me to say more than that, it would be speculation," Frazer added. He explained that Warner, 45, was being held in the "protective-custody area" of Golden Grove and serving a life sentence for one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated rape.
Since Warner's escape, a territory-wide manhunt has been launched, pulling in local and federal law enforcement agencies. Warner is considered extremely dangerous, according to Department of Justice officials. He is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds, is of medium build and has black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a white muscle shirt and gray sweatpants.
Frazer said a $10,000 reward is being offered for information that will lead to Warner's recapture.
Residents with information on Warner's whereabouts are urged to call the V.I. Police Department's Crime Stopper hotline at 777-8711 or emergency 911.
