2008 Afternoon on the Green Winners Announced
The University of the Virgin Islands has announced the winners of the food competition of the 19th Annual Afternoon on the Green held on March 9, on the St. Thomas campus. In the first-ever ital "Dubmasters" competition Imani took the first prize. The second-prize win went to Jambi and Nashamba I claimed the third-prize win. First-time contributor Delicia Greenaway won first prize in the Vegetables/Casseroles category for her tofu veggie lasagna. Loanne Cameron, also a first-time contributor, won first prize in the Side Dishes category for her macaroni and cheese. EPA Offers Recycling Conference on UVI's St. Thomas, St. Croix Campuses
A free, daylong conference on recycling in the Caribbean will be hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses on Wednesday, March 26. The conference is aimed at the entire community, from academia to governmental agencies, to individuals who may be interested in starting businesses related to recycling, said Jim Casey, the EPA's Virgin Islands coordinator. Casey said the focus will be on the importance of recycling that is tailored to the Caribbean, with a goal of stimulating the regional economy.
The Virgin Islands sessions will be linked to a larger conference in Puerto Rico that will feature regional, national and international stakeholders. Casey said information featuring practical approaches that have worked at other island jurisdictions will be offered. Interested individuals are asked to register for the conference by calling Casey at 714-2333 or Keshema Webbe at 714-0521. The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Campus locations for the two conferences will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.
The conference is being offered in partnership with UVI's Cooperative Extension Service.
UVI Alumna Laurel Royer Plans Presentations on Both Campuses
UVI alumna Laurel Royer, a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue University, will make presentations on UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses from March 26 through 28. Along with several technical sessions, she will offer a motivational speech titled "Preparing for Graduate School: The Inside Scoop from a UVI Alumna" at noon on Wednesday, March 26, on St. Croix and at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 28, on St. Thomas. The St. Croix session will be held in Evans Center room 716, while the St. Thomas session is in Chase Auditorium (B-110). Also on Wednesday, on St. Croix, Royer will be available to talk with students from 1 to 2 p.m. during lunch in the Cafetorium. She will visit with psychology, nursing and other majors at 5:30 p.m. in Evans Center room 405.
Royer will present on her current research topic – Investigating the Environmental Fate and Behavior of Perfluoroalkylated Substances – in a 1 p.m. session on Thursday, March 27, in Evans Center room 716 on St. Croix and at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 28, in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas.

Cooperative Extension Service Office on St. Thomas to be Relocated
The Cooperative Extension Service offices on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be temporarily relocated to the University's former Business and Finance Office (behind the golf course) while the CES's quarters in the Newhouse Building are renovated and repaired. The CES office move will take place this week (March 24-28), with limited services available from the old location. Morgan State University Choir to Perform at Island Center, Reichhold
Reichhold Center for the Arts and the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts present the return of the Morgan State University Choir to the Virgin Islands. The choir performs on Friday, March 28, at Island Center on St. Croix and Saturday, March 29, at the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas. Both shows start at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $18 and $25 on St. Croix and are available at Alliance Clothing, Urban Threadz and UVI Bookstore. UVI Accounting Association to Honor Nine Couples with Dinner, Dance
The Virgin Islands community is invited to honor the lifelong marriage commitments of nine couples on St. Thomas and St. John at the Golden Anniversary Dinner and Dance to be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the UVI Accounting Association Study Abroad Program. The honored couples have been active in the community and are role models in terms of sustaining their marriages.

Workshop on 'Managing Visitor Use in Protected Areas' Set March 26-28
A workshop on managing visitor use in marine and coastal protected areas is planned for March 26 through 28 on St. Thomas. It will be presented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. Included will be an overview of the human dimensions of protected area management, examples of visitor use and associated impacts to natural resources and visitor experiences, and suggestions to help managers address the people side of resource management. In addition to training sessions, presentations will be made by Hubert Brumant, director of the Magen's Bay Authority, Elba Richardson, a concessions specialist at the Virgin Islands National Park, and Sybille Sorrentino, owner of VI Ecotours. Days one and two of the workshop will take place at UVI's Small Business Development Center at Nisky Center. An optional field exercise is planned for day three. Presentation on 'Youths in Crisis' Set March 27 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI students, staff and faculty are invited to attend a presentation titled "Youths in Crisis … What Matters?" by Thomas Douglas. The presentation is set for 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus. Douglas is president of the Julia Williams Multipurpose Outreach Center and serves as the national training director for the Institute for Social Justice and the lead trainer for Faith Based Initiatives. Formerly, he was the Executive Director of Harlem Directors Group, an outreach organization for those at risk, infected or affected by the HIV/AIDS. Douglas has a seat on AIDS Action, a national advocacy organization, and has more than 17 years of professional experience in community outreach and program development. Summer Session, Fall Semester Registration Underway
Online registration is now available for UVI's two, 2008 summer sessions, as well as for the upcoming fall semester. Details on the registration process and class schedules are available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. UVI's Summer Session I is scheduled for May 19 through June 23. Summer Session II will run from June 25 through Aug. 1. UVI's fall semester classes begin on Aug. 18 and end on Dec. 3. Students must confer with advisors on course selection and obtain personal information numbers before they can register online.
