Week of the Young Child Celebrations This Week at Head Start Centers

April 14, 2008 — Parents of children attending Head Start centers across the territory are invited to the centers every day through Thursday this week to participate in a variety of activities to celebrate the Week of the Young Child.
"It's very important," said Masikia Lewis, acting preschool coordinator at the Human Services Department. "It gives parents an opportunity to be involved."
While parents are welcome at Head Start centers throughout the year, the Week of the Young Child puts a special emphasis on their participation, she said. Parents are invited to stay for lunch.
Events will embrace the different cultures of the children, with the parents invited to talk about their cultural traditions.
Activities throughout the week include parades, pajama parties, storytelling, family fun/parent days, open house for fathers, arts and crafts, literacy, safety awareness, socials, nutrition workshops and cultural activities, according to a news release from Human Services.
"Some of the parents are coming as storytellers," Lewis said.
Parents should contact their children's Head Start center to find out what activities are happening at what time, said Monife G. Stout, Human Services spokeswoman.
Head Start serves children ages 2 years and 9 months to 5. Territory wide 894 children are enrolled in Head Start, with 432 of them on St. Thomas and St. John.
The program is federally funded to the tune of about $7.3 million a year, Stout said.
Human Services activities for St. Croix's 14 Head Start centers will be announced later.
