May 15, 2008 – Like so many people of St. Thomas (but apparently not the decision makers), I mourn the loss of the beautiful Mahogany trees at Mandela Circle. Now I am again brought to tears by the loss of the little planted "traffic circle" that for so many years has been the canvas on which an un-sung artist has created an ever-changing work of art. You may have seen him at work amidst rush-hour traffic especially after a rain, when the earth became soft and, with shovel, broom and rake, he would create a fresh new design under the bushes, each one different from the last. It was such a pleasure to anticipate what visual treat I might find there as the traffic slowed for the lights.
Now that little oasis is gone and my friend has only hot, bare asphalt to sweep. This gentleman long ago took it upon himself to maintain that intersection, someone told me, in tribute to the memory of Nelson Mandela. As a street sweeper, his humble dedication day in and day out, no matter what the weather, has been an inspiration to me. I hope that, as an artist, he soon finds another canvas to display his talents. Friend, I am chagrined that I never asked your name, but I salute you and thank you for bringing unexpected joy and beauty into my life.
