Gario Takes East End Bike Race

June 3, 2008 – While no speed records were broken on Sunday, Juancito Gario used solid team tactics to win the East End Road Race in a time of 1:58:58. The three-lap, 39-mile race took place on the East End of St. Croix, and circled that end of the island in a counter clockwise direction, which is slightly more difficult than the usual clockwise race.
Gario and 340 STX teammate Glenn Massiah dispatched of Twin City rider Paul Trivino on the last lap, then worked over Sue Brown, with Gario beating Brown by three bike lengths in a sprint to the finish line. Brown was second in 1:59:01 and Massiah third in 1:59:34.
The two-lap, 26-mile Expert race also had its share of team tactics, as the Twin City boys used superior numbers to handle 340-rider DeWayne Smith. Jonathon Cruz attacked on the last hill and held on for the win in 1:20:25. Teammate Apolinar Acevedo won the sprint for second over Smith, in 1:20:32.
David Nowack was the victor in the 13-mile Sport race, finishing alone in first in 40:32. Mark Kennedy and Dick Isherwood were second and third in 40:44 and 40:51, respectively.
Darynnette Acevedo was the sole member of Women; she finished in 49:49.
The next race is the North Shore Road Race on June 15.
