John Jones Exhibits at Danica Gallery's Grand Opening

June 16, 2008 – Danica Art Gallery will have a grand opening exhibit from 5-8 p.m., on Thursday, June 19, at their new location, 6 Company Street, Apothecary Hall Courtyard. John Obafemi Jones will be the first artist to exhibit his recent art works at the new venue, which will be on display until July 10.
Jones is a St. Croix artist and head of the Art Department at St. Croix Educational Complex. He paints expressive jazz-related themes like Wassily Kandinsky and Romare Bearden.
" I am fascinated by music's emotional power. I particularly like the sounds and feelings I get when I listen to jazz played at many of the clubs on St. Croix. The music played here gives me the feeling to get up close and personal to the music," he stated.
To achieve the interpretation of the feelings that arise when he listens to music, Jones uses the elements and principles of art in a highly theoretical way. He believes that color and tone are associated with the personality of sound. Various hues represent different levels of pitch and sound.
Jones said, "Composition is linked to the volume of sound and I use subtle color lines to bring about harmony. Ultimately, it is my hope to create a work of art that will not only stimulate the viewers visually but like jazz will engage them emotionally, intellectually and spiritually."
