Dear Source:
Last week Senator Basil Ottley, whom I respect and admire, announced that he is resigning from the Legislature to begin his new role with the Department of Interior. I know this decision had to be a tough one for the Senator. His decision might be viewed by some as him not fulfilling his promise to those that elected him by not serving out his full term. However, I would like to be a strong voice of support for his decision.
Often times public servants make too many decisions for political reasons. Senator Ottley's reason for leaving is refreshingly not political but one that truly has the Virgin Islands and its residents at heart. The Department of Interior has the responsibility of overseeing all the US territories. When Senator Ottley assumes his new position on September 29th, we will have one of our own on the inside in a very critical role. He will be able to tell the Department's officials, to include the Secretary of Interior, exactly what the Virgin Islands need. He will do this after analyzing and doing his due diligence. With him serving in this position, he will be able to influence the lives of Virgin Islanders in a positive way for years to come. Furthermore, the Governor and Delegate now have another strong ally in Washington.
I admire him for the courage shown and know beyond a shadow of a doubt he made the right decision. I wish him the very best as he and his family makes this transition. Good luck Basil and please know that we believe in your ability and judgment and know you will do well.
