Sept. 5, 2008 — The territory's oldest grandparents will take center stage this month as stars of celebrations on St. Thomas Sunday at Emancipation Garden at 4 p.m., and on St. Croix, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Agriculture Fairgrounds.
Gov. John deJongh Jr. and first lady Cecile deJongh will honor Ursula Krigger, 106, on St. Thomas, and Zepherian Thomas, 102, on St. Croix.
Cultural talent will abound including Shawntay Henry, who took first place in the 2008 Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest in Washington, D.C., the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers, Voices of Love Choir, the St. Andrews Divine Dancers and the Nisky Moravian Bell Ringers.
The governor will present both ladies with a plaque honoring their years and accomplishments, in recognition of Grandparents Day.
The public is invited to both celebrations which will conclude with refreshments and a quadrille dance.
