Court Rules 2006 Property-Tax Bills Invalid — For Now

Sept. 15, 2008 — All 2006 property-tax bills have been rescinded based on a District Court ruling, but the Division of Property Tax cautions residents to "make provisions for the eventual payment of these taxes once the legal issues are resolved."
A statement issued Monday by the Division of Property Tax advises property owners "to withhold payments of their 2006 property-tax bills until further notice."
However, residents should continue paying outstanding property-tax bills for 2005 and earlier years and take advantage of the property-tax amnesty that ends Sept. 30, the statement says.
"The attorney general is presently seeking to clarify issues raised in the District Court's ruling, and the Division of Property Tax will continue to inform property owners as more information becomes available," the statement says.
