Police Nab One of Three Escaped Convicts

Sept. 21, 2008 — Eduardo Carmona Jr., one of three escapees from Golden Grove Correctional Facility described by police as "extremely dangerous," was apprehended by police in the Mon Bijou area on St. Croix Saturday evening after being shot in the leg.
Carmona was transported to Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, according to a Justice Department news release issued around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Carmona was listed in critical condition, the release said.
Meanwhile, the search is still on for two other inmates — St. John resident Derrick Fredericks, 28, and 33-year-old Carlos Burgos of St. Croix — who escaped with Carmona sometime between midnight and 10 a.m. Saturday. Community members have reported several sightings, and both federal and local law enforcement agencies are following up on all leads, according to the news release.

Carlos Burgos

Carmona was convicted in the murder of Laurel Jeffers on Brookman Road in June 2007. In addition to serving life in prison for that conviction, Carmona was also given two four-year terms for two separate shooting incidents in the months before the Jeffers murder, Justice Department spokeswoman Sara Lezama said Saturday.
Burgos was also serving a life term. He is described as a Hispanic male, with a light brown complexion, and a short, slim build with his hair styled in locks. He stands about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and has a scar on his left arm.

Derrick Fredericks

Fredericks is described as a slimly built black male with a brownish complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He has several tattoos on his arms, chest and back and a gold tooth in the top front of his mouth. His last known address is No. 48 U Hernhut. Fredericks is serving a five-year sentence for 2nd degree burglary.
When contacted earlier in the day, VIPD Commissioner James McCall said there is a $10,000 reward being offered for information leading to the capture of each suspect. He added that anyone suspected of harboring or aiding the escapees will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Police are asking anyone who might see or come in contact with any of these men to call them immediately. A Justice Department statement also warned the public not to approach these individuals but to immediately call police at 911 or 772-9111.
An investigation into how the inmates escaped is ongoing.
