Sept. 22, 2008 — Police have arrested two people in connection with a Monday-morning shooting that left one man dead of a gunshot wound to the head.
Police were alerted to an incident in the parking lot of Emerald Beach Hotel on St. Thomas around 7 a.m. Monday, where officers discovered that a man had been shot. The victim — whose name has not yet been released — was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Meanwhile, police cordoned off the area and began looking for suspects. Within a few hours, two persons of interest — Nigel Maynard, 22, and Ezekiel Daniel, 21 — had been detained and charged with the shooting, according to a V.I. Police Department news release.
The original charge against both is first-degree assault, and Daniel was also charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm with an obliterated serial number. Upon receiving news from the hospital that the victim had died, police said the charges against Maynard and Daniel would be upgraded.
The victim died in the intensive-care unit at Schneider Regional, according to hospital spokesman Sam Topp.
"The 35-year-old man had suffered a gunshot wound to the head when he was brought into the emergency room around 8:30 a.m.," Topp said in a Monday news release. "An attending physician said he was comatose at that time."
Efforts were made to transport the victim to an off-island facility for specialized brain surgery, but the victim had already died by the time physicians at Schneider Regional and Memorial Regional Hospital in south Florida had finished their consultation by telephone seven hours later, Topp said.
The victim died around 3:40 p.m. Monday.
