Sept. 29, 2008 — For the first time in more than a decade, a group of police auxiliary officers has completed training.
In a graduation ceremony at the Charlotte Amalie High School auditorium on St. Thomas, Judge Leon Kendall administered the oath of office to the 22 trainees.
"As a police officer who came up through the ranks, I know what it took for you to arrive at this auspicious moment," said Police Commissioner James H. McCall, according to a news release from the V.I. Police Department. He urged the class to be ethical in its behavior and put the safety and trust of the community first.
Rodney Querrard Sr., chief of police for the St. Thomas-St. John-Water Island district, will oversee the assignments of the new auxiliary officers.
"Domestic violence can ruin your career, and that goes for females as well as males," Querrard said.
Retired Police Auxiliary Captain Harold Baker told the grads he retired after serving 20 years as an auxiliary police officer.
"A law-enforcement career is one of the best careers you can have," Baker said.
Other speakers included Administrator Barbara Petersen, representing Gov. John deJongh Jr.; Executive Security Agent David A. Cannonier; and Training Director Doug Jones, the release said.
