Rebels, Just for Fun Win in Quarren Schjang 40-Plus Softball

Sept. 29, 2008 — The Rebels and eight-time defending champions Just for Fun were the Quarren Schjang 40-Plus Softball League winners Sunday at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark. The Rebels knocked off Mash-up 7-4 on the strength of a five-run seventh inning, and Just For Fun pummeled the Las Vegans16-5 in five innings by way of the 10-run mercy rule.
Rebels 7, Mash-up 4
The Rebels, trailing 4-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, erupted for five runs in the top of the inning to take a 7-4 lead and the game, as Mash-up had no answer in their half of the inning.
It was a pitching duel between starting pitchers Martin Burgos for the Rebels and Sergie Bell for Mash-up over the first four innings. The Rebels held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Mash-up scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead after five innings on RBI singles by Alan Yarwood and Edwin Rivera, and an unearned run.
After a scoreless sixth, the Rebels came up with their game-winning rally in the top of the seventh. They scored five runs on a two-run home run by Darwin Dowling, a two-run double by Ronald Hall, and an unearned run to pull out the victory.
Burgos picked up the win on the hill for the Rebels, while Bell got the loss. Top hitters for the Rebels were Hall, 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and Dowling, 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. For Mash-up, Rivera went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Bell and Wendell McIntosh both went 2 for 3.
Just for Fun 16, Las Vegans 5
Eight-time defending champions Just for Fun, behind a strong pitching effort by Edwin Sankitts and two home runs from Guido Schjang, overpowered arguably the league's most powerful team, the Las Vegans,16-5 in five innings to take the nightcap.
Guido Schjang's two-run blast in the top of the first gave the champs the early two-run lead, but the Las Vegans were able to answer with three runs in their half of the inning on Dennis Brow's three-run home run to take the only lead they would enjoy at 3-2 after one inning. Sankitts would then keep them scoreless over the next three innings.
After a scoreless second inning, Just for Fun exploded for 11 runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good at 13-2. They scored eleven runs on a three-run blast by Guido Schjang, a grand slam by Reuben Malloy, RBI singles by Reuben Mercado and Melvin George, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Enrique Soto, and a sac fly by Kai Schjang.
Just for Fun added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to complete their scoring for the night on a two-run double by Kai Schjang.
The Las Vegans came to bat needing to score four runs to avoid enforcement of the 10-run mercy rule, but they were only able to come up with two runs on Colin Jarvis' pinch-hit solo home run and Brows' RBI double.
Sankitts got the win on the mound for Just for Fun, while David Clarke got the loss for the Las Vegans. Top hitters for Just for Fun were G. Schjang, 2 for 2 with two home runs and five RBIs; Malloy, 3 for 3 with a grand slam and four RBIs; and K. Schjang, 2 for 2 with three RBIs. For the Las Vegans, Brow went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Jarvis went 1 for 1 with a home run and one RBI.
