Oct. 13, 2008 — Men who have picked up tools to handle and enjoy life will have the opportunity to pass them on to the next generation Sunday on St. Croix.
The Men's Carousel workshop, a hands-on program, will offer opportunities for learning, mentoring and father-son interaction. The St. Croix Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) will host the second annual event.
"We got the word from people who worship on Saturday that they wanted a workshop on Sunday," said Carolyn McKenzie, chairwoman of CTEC's Parent Advisory Committee. "So we promised this next workshop would be on Sunday."
The workshop will have something for everybody, with sessions on kite flying, woodworking, health issues and more, McKenzie said. Volunteers will teach a total of 14 workshops.
The Men's Carousel begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. It is free, with breakfast and lunch provided. The workshop will also feature a dominoes tournament with prizes.
The committee is looking for men to mentor and pair up with boys who don't have a father figure to go with.
"We can't ever have enough mentors," McKenzie said.
Among the mentors will be members of Rotary Mid Isle, Phi Beta Sigma and the V.I. National Guard.
The response has been good, but the workshop will have room for anyone who wants to attend, McKenzie said.
"We have to have men and boys together," said Cenita Heywood, organizer. "There is definitely a need for men and boys to have quality time together."
It takes a man around to raise boys, McKenzie said.
The organization also provides an annual fun day at the Hotel on the Cay.
