Oct. 18, 2008 – An important and informational meeting is scheduled for parents of students enrolled in the Learn-It After-School Program on for 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Lockhart Elementary School, according to a press release from Insular Superintendent of Schools for the St. Thomas-St. John District Jeanette Smith-Barry.
Classes begin on Wednesday, Oct. 22, and will be held on every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday following. The program begins 15 minutes after the regular school day ends and lasts for two hours each day. Classes are held at the students' home schools.
"Daily attendance in the Learn-It Program is mandatory, as it is crucial to students' improvements in learning and academic achievement. Additionally, strong and cooperative support from parents will help to ensure improved student learning and achievement, including improved student performance on the annual VITAL assessments of learning." Smith-Barry said.
It targets students in the second to ninth grades who show a need for assistance in the areas of reading and math. Students eligible for participation in the program are those who did not perform at the necessary achievement levels on the Virgin Islands Territorial Assessment of Learning (VITAL) or those who have a specific need as identified by their principal.
