Nov. 26, 2008 – In observation of Thanksgiving Day, Senator Louis Patrick Hill called upon Virgin Islanders to pause and give thanks to God for bestowing His benevolence upon the Virgin Islands and its people.
Stated Hill, "In facing reality, we recognize the world's economy has cast a cloud of global apprehension over all of us. Yet, at the same time, as we look into our hearts on Thanksgiving Day, we each must acknowledge there is something for which we should be thankful. Gratitude for our blessings is deep within our Caribbean culture."
Senator Hill went on to say that throughout the territory are those whose blessings are few, and whose need is great. On this Thanksgiving holiday, he asked that we dedicate ourselves to building a Virgin Islands in which one person's abundance becomes abundance for all to share. He reminded the community that through a small gesture such as donating your time to a local charity, or visiting someone confined to the hospital or nursing home, you can make a difference in the quality of someone's life. True compassion is when we place others at the center of our universe in place of ourselves.
In conclusion, Senator Hill said, "I urge all Virgin Islanders to join me in expressing gratitude to those who touch our lives everyday, and to extend a healing hand to those who need it the most. For as George Washington Carver said, 'How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong, because someday in life, you too will have been all of these."
