Rebels Beat Just For Fun 8-7 to Win Quarren Schjang Title

Dec. 1, 2008 — The Rebels, playing their first season in the Quarren Schjang 40 Plus Softball League, scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park over the weekend to beat defending champions Just for Fun 8-7 and claim the regular-season title.
The Rebels got a good pitching effort from ace Martin Burgos, who kept the powerful Just for Fun squad off balance for most of the game.
After JFF failed to score in the top of the first, the Rebels came up with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Darwin Dowling to take the early lead. The score would stay that way until the top of the fourth, when JFF got three runs on an RBI double by Gary Molloy, an RBI single by Reuben Mercado, and an RBI ground out by Mario Ortiz to take a one-run lead at 3-2. The Rebels had no answer in the bottom of the inning.
JFF was back on the attack in the top of the fifth, where they extended their lead to 6-2 on Guido Schjang's three-run blast. The Rebels got one back in the bottom of the inning on Neal Davis' solo shot to get one run closer at 6-3.
After JFF failed to score in the top of the sixth, the Rebels erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good at 8-6. They scored five runs on Mervin Mills' clutch two-out, three-run blast and Davis' two-run blast.
Needing two to tie and three to take the lead, JFF could only muster one run on Eustace Davis' RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the seventhe and they went down in defeat 8-7.
Burgos got the win for the Rebels, while Ortiz took the loss for JFF. Top hitters for the Rebels were Davis, 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs; Mills, 1 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs; and Dowling, 1 for 2 with two RBIs. For JFF, Guido Schjang went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Raymond Cintron went 2 for 3.
