Historical Society Plans to Explore Botany Bay Estate

Dec. 28, 2008 – The St. John Historical Society will explore Botany Bay at the far western tip of St. Thomas on Saturday, Jan. 17. The almost 400-acre estate was owned for many decades by the Corning family and was rarely seen by any Virgin Islanders. There are extensive plantation ruins as well as a Taino site on the property. David Knight will lead the adventure.
Explorers will take the 9:15 a.m. ferry to Charlotte Amalie where they will be met by taxi vans that will return them to Charlotte Amalie in mid-afternoon.
Space is limited for this trip and there will be a $25 charge per person for the taxi. The society must have a participant's name and payment by Jan. 8. For the security and liability purposes of the current owners, everyone will be asked to sign a waiver. Everyone is asked to bring a picnic lunch, something to drink and some sun block.
For more information or to sign up and arrange payment, contact Margie Labrenz at 693-8808.
