Jan. 5, 2009 – Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. said Saturday night he was saddened to learn of the passing of Ms. Eulalie R. Rivera, a community treasure who publicly celebrated her 100th Birthday last year along with friends and family at Frederiksted Fort Museum. Ms. Rivera died Friday, January 2, 2009 in Puerto Rico.
De Jongh said the loss of Ms. Rivera is a sad occasion for family and friends, and for the entire Virgin Islands community, as well. "Ms. Rivera was a tremendously well-loved and cherished member of the community who brought true happiness and joy to both young and old alike. Her passion for life and her calm, inner peace was both inspiring and engaging. She will be dearly missed."
Eulalie "Marlee" Rivera led a long and full life and was an individual of incredible talent and natural abilities. She was popular in all circles and up until her death was still providing inspiration to Virgin Islanders on balanced and happy living. On St. Croix, and throughout the Territory, she was well known as a former educator in the public school system, and she was the inspiration for which the Eulalie R. Rivera Professional Development Elementary School was named on St. Croix. Her talents also encompassed other disciplines, and she was an accomplished author, traditional cultural bearer and storyteller, singer, and political activist. Her spirit uplifted the community, and her presence at local events and activities was a constant and loving reminder of the importance of friends and family.
A true legend in her own time, Ms. Rivera was always engaging and spirited. In honoring the tremendous life of this special Virgin Islander, we join together in praise and loving respect of a very special woman and a beautiful life.
The grandson of Ms. Rivera, Senator Ronald E. Russell, Esq. will host a tribute to her life on Saturday, January 10, 2009 on the "Beyond Politics" Radio Program on 970 AM, WSTX. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
