Police Investigating Sunday Drowning

Police are investigating an accidental drowning that happened sometime before 3 p.m. Sunday at John Brewers Beach on St. Thomas.
The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Hospital Ground resident Edward Craig Jacobs.
According to witnesses, Jacobs and several other people were on a boat in the bay when they jumped over board to swim ashore. Jacobs experienced "some kind of distress" in the water and began shouting, according to a Police Department press release. A life vest was thrown to Jacobs, but by that time, he was already being pulled toward the shore by several beachgoers, the release said.
"According to medical personnel, life saving efforts were performed on Jacobs for approximately 45 minutes, but he was later pronounced dead," according to the VIPD release. While at the beach — which played host Sunday to the Texas Society of the Virgin Islands annual Chili Cook-off — police said Jacobs did appear to have a pulse before he was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center via ambulance.
