Red Cross Certified Instructors Teach Water Safety and Lifeguard Training Classes

American Red Cross certified instructors and aides at the Magens Bay Water Safety Training Center will teach lifeguard training classes as well as classes in how to be safe in, on and around the water.

Waterfront Lifeguard Training: Classes will be held from July 6-31. They will take place at Magens beach from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and from 1-5 p.m. on Saturdays. On Wednesdays, classes will be at UVI from 6-9 p.m. The pre-test will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, and again at 1 p.m. on Saturday June 19.
The pre-test consists of:
1. Swim 550 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order — 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front. 200 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 150 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. The 150 yards may be a combination of front crawl and breaststroke.
2. Timed event: 1 minute, 40 seconds — Starting chest deep, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke. Surface dive 7-10 feet; retrieve a 10-pound object; return to the surface; swim 20 yards back to the starting point; exit the water.
3. Underwater swim — swim 5 yards; submerge and retrieve 3 dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water; resurface and swim 5 yards back to starting point.

Learn to Swim Saturday Classes
Pre-registration will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday June 12.
Ages 6 months to 105 years from June 19 – July 24
Registration at 9 a.m. on Saturday June 19 at Magens Bay
American Red Cross Learn to Swim classes, ages 6 months to 105 years, begin on June 19 at Magens Bay and will be held for five Saturdays. The cost of the class is $75 ($65 for returning students) for the five weeks and includes water safety books. A family plan is available.
Children: 6 months to 5 years: Class is 9:30-10 a.m. (parents must accompany children in the water)
Children: ages 6 – 16: Advanced Swimmers class is 10-11 a.m.; Beginners class is 11 a.m. to noon;
Adults: ages 17 – 106: Class is 10-11 a.m. for beginners through advanced swimmers.
